We are very excited to have Ipad minis in the school that
we can book out for educational purposes. Today I booked out four Ipad minis
and showed the book club an App called Tellagami. The children organised
themselves into groups (and some went solo) and wrote their short book reviews.
They are more like scripts or soundbites than full book reviews, but I tried to
use this as a motivational tool to get them thinking about plot, character,
genre and audience, while not giving away the ending. Enjoy!

Reading Rivers
As a psychology student, I enjoyed being asked to create a life river, a visual representation of defining moments in my life journey. I took that idea and tweaked it a bit, coming up with the idea of a Reading River.
There are twenty members in the year 6 book club and they are all very enthusiastic about books. In the first week, I asked them to create Reading Rivers where they thought about the very first picture books that were read to them, perhaps by a granny or a parent or teacher, followed by their favourite chapter books to this current day. They really engaged in this activity, working alone or in groups. Being able to do something visually is much more fun than writing a list of your all-time favourite books! Book reviews to get the new year underway
The first term is well underway, so I expect you will be wondering what to read next. Here are some book reviews written by our fabulous Woodlands Park School children. Come and visit the library and find your next favourite book!
Perry leaned into Gran and blew gently on her cheek. "Gran," she said, "Gran? Who am I?"
"Well," said Gran tartly, "If you don't know, I can't help you!"
Perry's Gran can't remember things as well as she used to.
She decides to make an alphabet book of everything and everyone in Santa Lucia.
Perry tries her best to help her Gran learn who everyone is, including herself.
Will Perry's Gran find a way through the alphabet and learn, or not?

Meet Despereaux, the most adorable mouse ever. When Despereaux is born, his parents don't like him, neither does the rest of his family.
He knows how to read, which can be strange for a mouse.
One day Despereaux hears some music from the King and he falls in love with Princess Pea. He gets put in the dungeon for what he did.
Meet Roscuro and Migerry Sow, the two that don't go together. They take Pea into the dungeon.
Will Despereaux save Princess Pea and be able to make things right?

Will Selina ever find her happy ending?

The winning Woodlands Park book trailer for 2014 is ...
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe! by Vittoria, Jess, Molly, Kowhai and Holly! (Book by C.S. Lewis)
Congratulations! Two of these children (Vittoria and Jess) won the title last year too. (I see a career with Peter Jackson in the making ...)
I tallied up the online votes and the school votes and I am pleased to say that each trailer received a good number of votes at school and online. The library was full of children at lunch times who had come in to watch the trailers and place their votes, and there was a buzz of excitement as the teams promoted their trailers by writing slogans on the library windows with liquid chalk.
It was lovely to hear that parents had voted online to get behind their children. Ultimately, every one of the four teams can be really proud of their trailer. They all are a unique expression of the interpretations of the books that they chose.
I am looking forward to making book trailers again next year, and growing this project into mini IMovies if possible.
