Summer Reading Challenge winner

Congratulations to Ella who won the lucky draw for the Summer Reading Challenge prize.

There were 15 names in the draw and Ella read 49 out of a total of 248 books read by the children who signed up this summer. She went away happy with her prize - a book of course!

Well done everyone and thank-you for taking part.

Summer Reading Challenge

I'm thankful to the previous WPS students who loved helping in the library when they were at this school and come back every year to help out. Pictured here are Naomi and Bianca with their display for our Summer Reading Challenge. Now that all the books have been accounted for in the annual stock take, I can lend them out for summer, to help stop the summer reading slide.

If you read ten books and bring me your log next year you will be entered into a lucky draw for a prize.

You can also write book reviews on the books you read, on our school library website. Details are on the Summer Reading Challenge log.

Year 3-5 children have been invited to sign up and issue their books at morning tea today to get the ball rolling.

Parents of children in year 0-2 will need to sign up for juniors wanting to participate. You can pop in anytime between now and 1.30pm on Friday, during school hours.

There are a few criteria:

  • Children must have no outstanding books out.
  • They will need a library bag to take the books home in
  • Children need to commit to bringing the books back, undamaged next year
This is not open for year sixes, however, I wish the year sixes all the best with your new schools. We will miss you!

The Corr Challenge Shield was awarded to the school Librarians this year!

Congratulations to the school librarians for winning the Corr Challenge Shield this year.

Well done! It's a busy job being a school librarian - with all the shelving, issuing, returning, dusting, helping with displays - reading to the younger children, helping tidy up after lunch, helping with Lego club and more.

A special thanks to Thomas who was an immense help with this year's stocktake. Not only did he persistently visit classrooms to collect books, but he helped me with the actual stocktake: scanning and re-shelving and hunting for books at the end - always with a smile.

The children who were awarded 'Librarian of the term' this year were:

Term 1: Portia
Term 2: Nikola
Term 3: Cole & Daniel
Term 4: Ella, Jacob & Thomas

Ka Pai!

Book character dress up at the Reading Fair

Thank you for dressing up! It was such a fun day :) Thank-you to the year 3/4 councillors for taking wonderful pictures.

Reading Fair boards

Congratulations to the Y6 book club for your creativity and effort in creating Reading Fair boards that inspire the imagination. The following four boards received a Highly Commended ribbon. Well done!

The Twits - Anya, Emma and Zoe

The Secret Tree - Sophie D and Sofia

Famous Five - Five on a Treasure Island - Finn, Jacob & Ben

Famous Five - Five on a Treasure Island - Sian, Sean, Te-Aria & Ellie

The children chose who they would work with, and which book they wanted to represent. They were given a 'blank canvas' and they could use their imaginations to create a display board that reflected their chosen book. It was interesting to see Enid Blyton and Roald Dahl coming up strongly. Micah read the Famous Five on Treasure island to the children in his class, hence the renewed interest in Enid Blyton's classic series.

The boards were judged by four volunteer judges - Nick, Micah, Jenny and Nadia. Thank-you so much for your time, judges. They were judged on design and the content of the literary elements (plot, setting, characters, genre, etc).

The following boards were Commended. Well done everyone.

A shout out to Anton who completed his board solo as his friend had to relocate early in the year. Well done on your tenacity.

Star Wars Jedi Academy - Anton (and Matt originally)

Wonder - Nikola, Sophie H & Esme

The Pet War - Mikayla, Brenna & Rosie

The BFG - Phoenix & Riley

The Island of Lost Horses - Emily & Issey

Captain Underpants - Josh & Brwyn

Danny the Champion of the World - Kalo, Henry G & Henry L

I will post pics of the book character dress up soon.

The winning book trailer of 2016 is...

The Maze Runner - by Phoenix, Kalo, Henry L, Henry G and Riley

Congratulations! This trailer was a unanimous winner, winning both the online votes and the school votes. What I like about this trailer is the action scenes, the editing of pictures to create maze effects, the thoughtful captions which lead one through the story and lend it a sense of coherence and flow, and the careful choice of theme music which adds to the mood. The boys worked well as a team, using their energy to film some exciting action clips on the field, and Phoenix used his video editing prowess to enhance some of the pictures.

It was encouraging to see that all of the book trailers received a number of votes. Thank-you to the children who visited at lunch times and placed your votes, and the parents, friends and whanau who supported their children by voting online.

Some feedback for the other wonderful book trailers: I was impressed with the creative use of props (like the wooden train representing the Hogwarts Express in the Harry Potter trailer) and the small toy car photographed to appear as if there was a full sized car on the field in Cat and Mouse in a Haunted House. That tricked a few children who wanted to know how we got a car onto the field. The Gangsta Granny girls carried bags of recycling pretending it was loot, and the 100 Ride Bus Ticket team used Pic-collage to edit trolleys, tickets, buses and eggs into their pictures. The Little Shop of Hamsters girls edited in a picture of a hamster biting a child in a pet shop. Eek! In Diary of a Wimpy Kid I enjoy the before and after pics of how our family should be, and "what we got", as well as the hilarious wig dress up scenes.

I hope that you all had fun, book club.

Next term we will finish our boards and hold a Reading Fair to display them (like a Science Fair but all about books) and then hopefully we will have a few weeks where we can just meet and chat about books.
