And the winner is ...

Well, let me first tell you that 113 people voted online and almost all of the children at Woodlands Park School voted (our roll is around 350). Different trailers were popular with the different syndicates with a few firm favourites across the school and community. The junior syndicate favoured Nancy Drew, Captain Underpants and Paddington Bear equally. The school votes were more spread out than the internet votes with each and every trailer getting a big pile of votes.

A massive congratulations go to each and every child for their creative book trailers. Give yourselves a big pat on the back. And now, here it is; the winning:

Woodlands Park Book Trailer of 2013:

Paddington Bear: Book Trailer by Vittoria and Jess

Runner up:

Brother Band: Book Trailer by Zac

Third place:

Nancy Drew: Book Trailer by Paloma

Well done!

Done & Dusted

The library stocktake is ALMOST done and (shelves) dusted! Thank-you so much to Joanne, Alison, Louise, Angela and Shelley for giving up so much of your time and energy. It was super to get those 793.73 (Dewey decimal) books back into order :) You guys were amazing! We have scanned over 4000 books.

Now I just need to find a few books that we missed (tomorrow's job) and then we will successfully have got that job completed. Thanks, Selena - you have such endurance!

Once stocktake is well and truly out of the way we will look towards getting a summer reading programme on offer.

Books are a treasure!

Our books are a real treasure. This year we earned an abundance of new books through the library book fair (which was so heartily supported) and through Scholastic lucky book club (thank-you for supporting this on an ongoing basis) and we have spent our budget (thoughtfully) on non-fiction, award-winning fiction, picture books, sophisticated picture books and graphic novels. In celebration of our wonderful new collection of books, we are currently running a Pirate theme, with the coveted treasure displayed in a chest, richly overflowing with brand new, fabulous, sparkling, colourful BOOKS - available for loan to our school children and staff.

There is a make-shift pirate ship that the children have enjoyed climbing under and peeping through the portholes, or sitting quietly in while they read, read, read ...

It is hard to put into words why books are such a treasure, so I've turned to the poets:

Notes on the Art of Poetry by Dylan Thomas

I could never have dreamt that there were such goings-on
in the world between the covers of books,
such sandstorms and ice blasts of words,
such staggering peace, such enormous laughter,
such and so many blinding bright lights,
splashing all over the pages
in a million bits and pieces
all of which were words, words, words,
and each of which were alive forever
in its own delight and glory and oddity and light.
So READ, me hearties! Dip your hands into the treasure chest and select, carefully, thoughtfully and with relish... books to take home and read, page through, skim, savour and enjoy!

Hi there readers!

Over the past few months I have been posting links to book trailers created by members of the Y5/6 book club, Black & White Inc. We have been working on this project in stages. The first step was to write a book review... and if you scroll down the page or click on earlier posts you will find some of the engaging reviews that they wrote. These are also displayed in the library if you would like to read them in hard copy.

Stage two was to create storyboards. These did not need to be works of art, but just a rough timeline of the story to be told through images and captions.

Thereafter we talked about copyrights, creative commons and the importance of referencing any pictures that you use from the internet.

In a few days time I will announce more information about the Book Trailer Competition that we will be running at the school. So book club members who would like to get their trailer complete in time, please go online at home, with your parent's help and consent of course, and see if you can get those images put into our Dropbox folder. For those of you who don't finish in time for the competition, don't despair... we will be doing many more fun, literary projects this year.

Yours in books,
Kate

Just a dog - by Michael Gerard Bauer

This book is about a very patient dog named Mister Mosely. Would you like to choose a book when you're a baby?

My favourite part of the story was when Mister Mosely got something stuck in his mouth. I liked that part because Mister Mosely got stuck halfway every time in the neighbour's garden. Well, Mister Mosely is a main character. Something about Mister Mosely is that in the dark he looks like a ghost with black spots.

This book is a chapter book and it is for animal lovers. I loved the book because it was all about him and I thought I was Mister Mosely. I say it was ten out of ten.

Book reviews by Black & White Inc. book club

Firstly, my humble apologies to Alex for taking a while to type up your book review, but now that Clifford and the travelling book fair has left town, I can attend to the important business of getting your lovely review online for all to see!

The Dare Game - by Jaqueline Wilson

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to have no real home? Meet Tracy Beaker, a stubborn little girl with a fierce attitude. She was put into a children's home. (Tracy knows it as "the dumping ground") by her mum because she was too busy acting in Hollywood to look after her. Everyone is awful to this new girl, but one day, out of the blue, she gets adopted. She is overjoyed with her new foster mum. But not everything goes as planned ...

Join Tracy, football, Alexander, Cam and Carly on an adventure throughout her newest book. But when football and Tracy get into a fight, what happens to Alexander? Find out by reading this awesome book! And will Tracy ever see her beloved mum again? This chapter book about Tracy Beaker is one of Jaqueline Wilson's best novels yet. I recommend this book for girls, but boys would enjoy it too.

Hatchet book review

Hatchet – Gary Paulsen

What would you do if you survived a plane crash into the vast Canadian wilderness with one prized possession, a hatchet? How would you make a shelter? What would you eat? How would you fish without hook, line or sinker?
Fire is necessary for warding off bears and wolves in the night. Fire is essential for warmth, for cooking, and as a mosquito repellent – but how would you start a fire without a single match?
Brian Robeson is a city boy whose only luck is surviving a crash landing. The rest of his luck he has to make himself, by toughening up, thinking things through, being patient and becoming very much one with the natural environment.

Bear Grylls would be impressed at the courage and determination shown by a thirteen year old city boy, battling to survive against the fiercest of odds. This fictional adventure story is sure to delight boys and girls, children and adults. It is slightly disturbing in places, but I think you’re all mature enough to cope. So hop aboard the Cessna 406 bushplane and get ready for the unexpected!

Well done to the children of Woodlands Park who have read so many books that we have adorned the entire library with paper-chains - where each link names a book read.

PS - Thank-you to those parents who have kindly offered to help out. I am looking for a few more volunteers, especially for the Wednesday afternoon, so please don't hesitate to contact me, even if you only have half an hour to spare. Thanks.

Book Reviews by Black & White Inc. Book Club ...

The Adventures of Captain Underpants - The First Epic Novel by Dav Pilky

George Beard and Harold Hutchins are the best of friends. They live next door to each other. They are in the same fourth grade class at elementary school. They amazingly created Captain Underpants, using the power of hypnosis - WOW!

Throughout the story Captain Underpants, superhero, has many epic adventures. My favourite part of the story is when two robots break out of a rare crystal shop with a diamond. They also happen to be driving a van with Captain Underpants's cape caught at the back corner and George and Harold holding on to his feet, while speeding on skate boards. I liked this part of the story because it was EXTREMELY funny!

Captain underpants is a comedy, fantasy, action chapter book with illustrations.

The One and Only Ivan! By Katherine Applegate

If you love stories with friendship, bravery and amazing animals then you would want to read this one! Ivan is a silverback gorilla that lives in a mall at Exit 8. All day Ivan sits in his domain and watches TV or eats bananas. Ivan's best friends are an elephant called Stella and a street dog called Bob. Half way in the story a little elephant comes and joins Ivan, Stella and Bob. Her name is Ruby. One night Stella's leg was hurting and made Ivan promise to take care of Ruby and find her a better home.

This is an amazing book that I could read a million times. I give this book five stars!
