More face-out displays to encourage reading

It's lovely to see you again, Woodlands Park children.

In between class visits today, I went into the catalogue and called up a list of books that had been read less than 3 times.

The new-ish ones have been put on the new books shelf to draw readers attention to them. Older books have been put into a box. They won't be written off, and if children request them I can easily pull them out of the box, but the goal is to make space on the shelf for more books showing their lovely faces to the children.

I hope to see children 'discovering new books' (that have actually been here a while) - with great excitement!

I'm up to the letter M, for More To Do on Thursday...

A wonderful NZSO storytime & a couple of Lit Quiz Kahoots

Kia Ora,

Remember listening to Peter and the Wolf when you were a child (Mums and Dads)? I loved it! It came to mind when I checked out this fabulous production:

National Poetry Day 2020

Poetry is a powerful expression of raw emotion, a condensed sensory delivery of words, drenched in meaning. Or it may be playful and fun. Expressive! I love poetry.

Did you write a poem today? Would you like to write me a poem about your week 5 at level 3 lockdown? Email it to me at library@woodlandspark.school.nz and I will post some of the poems on this blog!

Here are some children reading poems:

New Books and Resources

Morena,

Yesterday I enjoyed reading a few books out loud to some of the tamariki who are at school, including the NZCYA finalist, The Smelly Giant and How not to annoy Dad which had us in stitches.

I covered a pile of new picture books - ready for you to enjoy when you get back to school. Check them out.

A couple of interesting posts popped up on my Facebook last night which I want to share with you:

Young Ocean Explorers posted this:

"We've put the inspirational interviews with these ocean gurus on our site, so schools can use them during lockdown"

And a SLANZA librarian posted a Roald Dahl Kahoot quiz:

I tried it out and it's fun - and only open for two days...

My next post will be about our librarians of the term ...

Stay safe and well.

Week 5 announcements

Hi everyone,

Sadly, as you will be aware, Book Week and the book fair will not be going ahead next week in Alert Level 3. We will advise you about whether it will be cancelled or postponed in due course.

On a brighter note, there are some wonderful resources available that I would like to share with you today.

Check out these virtual storytimes and author interviewshttps://lianza.org.nz/events/new-zealand-book-awards-for-children-and-young-adults/books-alive/

I have listened to a number of these author interviews. They are truly inspirational!

There are also a number of virtual storytimes. Check them out here:

https://my.christchurchcitylibraries.com/books-alive/#Virtual

These are the finalists of the NZ Book Awards for Children and Young Adults, and well worth listening to, for the love of books!

Resources: Please also check out the wakelet I curated last time we were in lockdown. It includes authors reading aloud, links to audiobooks, crafty websites, etc.

Librarians of the term

Each term I choose librarians of the term. They need to embrace the school values:

Library monitors embrace school values:

Manaakitanga (Respect) Whanaungatanga (Relationships)

Rangatiratanga (Leadership) Kaitiakitanga (Guardianship)

They need to work well as a team, show initiative, help others, be kind, have excellent attendance and stay on task with jobs like shelving, scanning, tidying, etc.

In term 1 our librarians of the term were:

Lucy, Neve, Megan, Ashley (they won this in Term 1 of 2019 as well!) and Jimmy Nelson.

I record attendance and being on task with Dojo points and this was entirely fair and well deserved.

I have just selected our librarians of the term for T2, so watch this space - a pic and names will be posted soon.

Keep up the good work!

We have been making a korowai for a Matariki display in the library. Children of all ages have been designing colourful feathers at lunchtimes in the library.

We have some fabulous books on Matariki in our school library. Check them out here: http://library.woodlandspark.school.nz/#!resources/searchresult

Hauora display (Term 1 & 2)

In Term 1 and 2, our inquiry focus was on Hauora. This was our display. In the next post, I'll pop up a pic of our new display...
